No Identity Needed

The discovery of one’s intrinsic self-nature

is to abandon any need to locate oneself in one’s experience.

One is not separate from any aspect of the unfolding,

and although one may, at times sense

the vast emptiness or the inherent wholeness and Unity

one has ceased to define who one is

and one no longer needs to know.

One simply IS. That is obvious and enough.

Even the identity “I Am” can be let go of, because

one knows beyond any doubt that One already Is.

.

On the other hand, Ego is the need to be someone,

that deep, unrelenting insecurity that is compelled to find out,

in the face of the fear that one may crumple

or dissolve completely and cease to exist.

It is the ultimate imposter syndrome.

It manifests either as a constant checking to see if one is still here,

an ongoing reassessment to check that the masks still fit,

or the extreme bluster of projecting one’s belief in an established role,

in a brash attempt to drown out the doubts that fracture any fixed shell,

doubts ever present from the deep knowing that all identities are false.

.

Not needing to know or present an identity

allows the flexibility to inhabit any role that may be appropriate:

Friend, colleague, lover: life gives us multiple roles to play.

Play them wholeheartedly and without holding back,

without the need to constantly attach to them as fixed points,

for no-thing is permanent and unchanging,

and skilful-means require the ability to flex according to circumstance.

Life is a playground of characters and the rules are to be alert, awake and to care,

to care more deeply than you ever could when self-care was the priority,

leaving little free attention for much else.

.

In many ways then, maybe this blog, this investigation

is an expression of the ego’s need to know who one is,

or maybe it is the inner guru cleansing perception

of the false to reveal the real.

This may appear to the ego as a journey of self-discovery

little knowing that this journey will result in its demise.

But the fact of the matter is, that it is

and always has been, an act of purification

as the Real faces into and sees through the false,

liberating one into the endless space of Being.
