Waving Not Drowning

  • with apologies to Stevie Smith

.

There is always a question sitting just behind experience,

though few would acknowledge its presence.

Who Am I? Who is experiencing this moment?

We generate concrete answers to avoid the existential angst

of struggling to define it, to catch it and present it to the world

and then we cling ‘for dear life’ to the masks we have created.

.

For those who hear the question with their heart

and follow the quest to find out for themselves,

a penetrating flash of insight into the clarity of

not being anything knowable, starts the

journey of unwrapping the many layers

we have cocooned ourselves within.

.

We start to feel comfortable with not having a clue,

because the more we let go

the easier the experience of Being becomes.

We discover that we are inherent freedom

unlimited by the actualities of embodiment,

our tool for participating in the unfolding creation.

.

Yet the layers become ever more subtle.

The urge to identify is hard to resist.

If you still find an identity in any aspect of your experience,

be it ecstasy, peace, joy, fulfilment or a deep sense of knowing

from conscious recognition, then you are still clinging

to a log in the ocean to stop yourself from drowning.

.

To be fully your inherent and only true Self

is to not identify with anything, even the Godhead.

Recognising the impulse to grasp even the subtlest

of elements arising, simply see it and stop.

To manifest the unimaginable totality of Being as Self,

abandon the ‘need to know’ that kick-started the journey.
